I've talked to Peter at several comic book conventions now. For the most part, I see him at the San Diego Comic-Con. The first time I saw him there, I told him that one of the first of his books that I read was the first book he published, A Fine and Private Place. I also told him that I received my copy of A Fine and Private Place from my mother, who had herself read it in her twenties. Peter, being as kind as he is, seemed to delighted to hear that his book had been handed down from one generation to the next, and he said that if I mailed it to him, he would sign it and mail it back to me. I never took him up on that offer, but the year after that, I did bring my equally ancient copy of The Last Unicorn, and he signed the second page of the book.
He tenido la oportunidad de hablar en diversas ferias de cómic con Peter, pero sobre todo lo veo cada año en el San Diego Comic-Con.La primera vez que lo vi allí le comenté que la primera novela suya que leí fue "A Fine and a Private Place", también su primera novela. También le conté que fue mi madre quien me la regaló, quien a su vez lo leyó cuando rondaba los 20 años. Peter, siendo tan amable como es, estaba encantado de oír que su libro había pasado de una generación a otra y me dijo que si se lo enviaba, estaría encantado de firmarlo. Nunca le envié el libro, pero esperé al siguiente año para llevarle mi ejemplar de The Last Unicorn, igual de antigua, y me la firmó la novela en su segunda página.
Since that first meeting, my visits with Peter at conventions have gotten longer and even more enjoyable. I should mention that this is in no small part due to the presence of Peter's business manager/editor/publisher, Connor Cochran. Connor attends these conventions with Peter, discusses Peter's current projects with people who stop by the table, and, for anyone who happens to linger around the table eager to talk, provides wonderful conversation on many subjects. He is a kind gentleman and a perfect complement to the writer sitting next to him!
Desde aquel primer encuentro, mis visitas al stand de Peter en las diferentes convenciones han sido siempre muy agradables. Y debo añadir que también es debido a la presencia de su amigo, compañero, manager, editor y representante Connor Cochran. Connor siempre acompaña a a Peter, cuenta entusiasmado los proyectos de Peter con la gente que se acerca a la mesa y todo aquél que esté cerca. Da muchísima conversación y es muy agradable. Es un hombre muy amable y un compañero excelente que hace muy buen equipo con el escritor (Peter).
No matter how many years pass, Peter seems to look the same. He is very easy to identify, with his slightly scraggly hair and the black leather jacket that he almost always seems to wear. The eyes are both kind and mischievous; you can tell that Peter enjoyed some shenanigans when he was younger. :) His eyes seem to glisten while he talks.
No importan los años que pasen, Peter siempre parece el mismo. Es fácil de identificar, con su pelo blanco y su chaqueta de cuero negra que parece llevar a perpetuidad. Sus ojos son amables y a la vez maliciosos: se podría decir que disfrutó de una juventud muy intensa. :) Sus ojos parecen brillar mientras habla.
And Peter will talk for a long time, and it's wonderful. I've seen him spend twenty minutes talking to one person, which, at busy conventions, very few artists or writers do. But Peter never gives the impression that it's time for him to move on to the next fan. He's very gracious. He will talk about literature, and he will talk about his friends; he will make fans who visit him feel as if they are his friends and have been for a long time. Get him talking about poetry if you ever meet him. He loves poetry, and it shows. He has entire volumes of poems memorized, and he recites them beautifully. The last time I saw him, at the Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo (C2E2), he began telling me about a poet named A.E. Housman, and for five wonderful minutes, he recited one of Housman's most subtly defiant poems. Amazing!
Peter siempre habla muchísimo y eso es genial. Le he visto entretenido durante 20 minutos hablando con una sola persona, cosa que muy pocos artistas y escritores suelen hacer. Pero Peter nunca da la impresión que quiere cortarte para pasar al siguiente fan. Es muy amable. Te hablará de literatura, de sus amigos, y logra hacerte sentir como si fueseis amigos de toda la vida. Se sabe interminables poemas de memoria, y los recita con una belleza sin par. La última vez que lo vi, en el Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo (C2E2), me habló de un poeta llamado A.E. Housman, y durante 5 preciosos minutos, me recitó sus poemas. ¡Fue increíble!
At C2E2, my partner, Wes, talked to Connor, and they both noticed something that Wes told me about later: Almost everyone who meets Peter ends up kneeling on the floor to talk to him at eye level instead of standing as most people do at conventions. I don't know how it happens, but Peter has this way of creating a bubble around him and the person he's talking to, and it's as if the only things that exist in the world are him, the other person, and the conversation they are having. Peter truly is a great storyteller.
En el C2E2, mi compañero Wes habló con Connor, y comentaron algo de lo que se habían dado cuenta: casi todo el que habla con Peter acaba arrodillado en el suelo, para estar a la altura del escritor y hablar con él, ojo con ojo. No sé cómo lo hace, pero logra que te olvides del mundo a tu alrededor, que sólo existís tú y él y la conversación que estáis teniendo. Peter es un auténtico cuenta-cuentos.
