Ya hay fecha de publicación para la nueva edición "The First Last Unicorn and Other Beginnings"

Ayer fue un gran día en el que visité junto a mi compañero de radio Rafa de 10contraUno (Ràdio St. Vicenç) la presentación del libro "El chico de las palomas" de Meir Shalev. Un gran escritor, por cierto. Explicó cosas muy interesantes acerca de cómo nació el libro, cómo a mitad de su escritura conoció a alguien que cambió el desarrollo de la historia y la enriqueció con otra historia que Meir Shalev decidió incorporar a la suya.

Pero bien, ¿a qué viene todo esto de El chico de las palomas y qué tiene que ver con Peter S. Beagle? Pues todo, en realidad ... Shalev me dejó tan intrigada por sus libros (sobre todo por uno que publicará a mediados-finales de este año y que se titula My Russian Grandmother and her American vacuum cleaner), que decidí buscarlo en Amazon y vaya sorpresa que he tenido que, aprovechando que ya estaba, busqué si había alguna nueva noticia acerca de Peter S. Beagle. Y así llegamos al fin a la cuestión de este post, y es que ... ATENCIÓN FANS DE PETER: EN MARZO 2012 SE PUBLICARÁ THE FIRST LAST UNICORN AND OTHER BEGINNINGS!

Al fin vamos a tener la oportunidad de leer cómo empezó en realidad la historia del libro más famoso de Peter S. Beagle (The Last Unicorn), junto con otras anécdotas e historias inéditas hasta el momento. ¡FANTÁSTICO! Con todas sus letras, sí señores y señoritas. Tras muchas semanas desaparecida, aquí estoy de vuelta con novedades (aunque en realidad no son tan frescas) del mundo de las esencias y del Último Unicornio de Peter S. Beagle.

Entremos de lleno en materia:

Conlan Press y Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab siguen adelante con su proyecto de esencias inspiradas en la novela The Last Unicorn y podemos admirar las ilustraciones que decoran las etiquetas de las botellas, inspiradas en la novela gráfica que se publicó a principios de año en su versión de recopilatorio en tapa dura, con entrevistas e ilustraciones exclusivas que no se vieron en la versión de los cómics sueltos (para más información, clicar aquí).

Nos complace enormemente seguir disfrutando de este maravilloso escritor que tantas novelas, historias cortas, poemas y canciones nos ha legado a nosotros y a la literatura universal. Y para celebrarlo como es debido, un cupcake y una de sus novelas.

THE ROCK IN THE PARK

Con tintes de los años 60 e inspirado en la infancia del escritor en el Bronx, Beagle recrea la historia de dos muchachos que una tarde de finales de verano se topan con una familia de centauros en medio de un parque en el Bronx.

La Roca del parque Van Cortlandt Park en el Bronx, es el sitio de encuentro de Phil y [Peter] Beagle, donde pasan las tardes calurosas hasta que anochece. Una apacible tarde, una familia de centauros se presenta ante ellos: ¡se han separado del grupo con el que viajaban para emigrar a un sitio más caluroso! Preocupados, deciden mostrarse ante los dos chicos humanos en busca de ayuda.

Phil mantiene su cabeza fría y decide dibujarle un mapa que les llevará a donde quieran ir. ¿Pero cómo puede caber todo un mapa de miles de kilómetros, en una pequeña ilustración? La magia de los centauros actuará sobre los maravillosos pinceles de Phil, y también sobre la imaginación poética de Beagle...

SLEIGHT OF HAND

Una mujer, rota por el dolor. Ha perdido a su marido y su hija pequeña. No sabe qué hacer. Está desesperada. Desea haber sido ella quien perdiera la vida, a cambio de devolversela a su marido y a su pequeña. Tras el funeral decide subirse al coche y conducir sin rumbo fijo, hasta que decide pararse en un pequeño pueblo donde un restaurante de carretera llama su atención. "Cenas mágicas" se anuncia en el cartel. Un anciano que hace pequeños trucos de magia. Ella decide marcharse pero no encuentra el camino de vuelta a su coche, y el extraño mago la sigue hasta que ella decide enfrentarse a él. Y es que ambos ya se conocieron, mucho, mucho tiempo atrás.

Ambos cierran un trato: él se apiada de ella; ella le pide que obre su magia y la ayude a cambiarse en el accidente, salvando así la vida de su marido y de su hija. Él acepta ...

THE CHILDREN OF THE SHARK GOD

Una preciosa leyenda digna de las historias más hermosas del lejano oriente. Un pequeño pueblo pesquero que adora al dios del mar: un tiburón. El dios del mar que se enamora de la joven Mirali. Ambos deciden unirse y así nacen los gemelos, un niño y una niña: Keawe y Kokinja. Ambos crecen sin saber jamás quién es su padre. El dios del mar vuelve una noche cada año, para estar con su amada y para velar sobre el sueño de sus hijos, hasta que un día Mirali decide contarles quién es su padre.

Pero los ya adolescentes no se lo toman demasiado bien. Kokinja, que ha crecido para ser una muchacha fuerte y testaruda, decide nadar en busca de su padre. Keawe, sabiendo que su madre no soportaría quedarse sola, se queda atrás. Pero pronto se embarcarán en la búsqueda (él y Mirali) de su hermana Kokinja y de ese padre que nunca llegaron a conocer.

THE BEST WORST MONSTER

Esta es una divertida historia de un monstruo que fue creado por un loco maestro que quería vengarse de toda aquella persona del pueblo que le hubiera molestado en alguna ocasión de su vida. El monstruo obedece todas las ordenes de su maestro, pero no con todo el agrado que debería suponer para un monstruo y es que, en el fondo, lo de destruir y aterrorizar a la gente, no le va demasiado ...

WHAT TUNE THE ENCHANTRESS PLAYS

Volvemos a zambullirnos en el mundo de THE INKEEPER'S SONG, en este caso, conociendo la historia de Breya, una joven hechicera, descendiente de una estirpe de brujas. La madre de Breya es la brillante y temida Willalou quien se casó con Dunreath, nativo del pueblo Kalagira. Y es que la magia se transmite sólo de madre a hija, siempre y cuando haya sido engendrada por un padre nativo de Kalagira.

Un día, cuando Breya todavía es pequeña, aparece el niño Lathro con el que Breya se criará hasta la edad adulta. Evidentemente, el roce hace el cariño, y Lathro y Breya se enamoran perdidamente el uno del otro. Pero su amor, aunque puro y verdadero, tiene un obstáculo: Lathro no es nativo de Kalagira, por lo que su descendencia, jamás será portadora de la magia de la estirpe de Breya. Y aunque a Breya poco le importa, a su madre Willalou no le parece correcto, y decide hechizar al joven Lathro para que se marche del pueblo y no vuelva jamás.

Pero Breya sale en su búsqueda, encontrando por el camino verdades muy dolorosas que harán que se enfrente a una rencorosa anciana bruja y a un "Ser" terrible que pondrá a prueba toda la magia de la hechicera.

LA LUNE T'ATTEND

Una historia de hombres lobo. Pero diferente, muy diferente. Dos ancianos hombres lobo han dejado atrás los tiempos más "locos" de su existencia. Acomodados en sus vidas de padres y abuelos, esconden a sus descendientes su condición de hombres lobo. Pero una noche el pasado viene en su busca, amenazando no solo sus vidas, sino la de sus descendientes.

UP THE DOWN BEANSTALK: A WIFE REMEMBERS

Esta historia es de lo más divertida: ¿no os habéis planteado nunca los cuentos desde la perspectiva del "malo"? Pues en este, la protagonista es la vieja bruja que en el cuento de Hansel y Gretel, habita la casita de golosinas, y el niño (en este caso Jack, el de las habichuelas mágicas) le planta cara a la vieja bruja. ¿Se comerá la bruja a Jack? ¿Logrará escapar?

THE RABBI'S HOBBY

Si este libro se caracteriza por algo, es por la cantidad de historias de fantasmas que lo conforman. Y aquí una de ellas: un niño que tiene que estudiar para su Bar-Mizwa, un rabino que está a punto de desesperar porque el chiquillo parece no poder retener ni una sola palabra que debe memorizar para la ceremonia.

El rabino tiene una afición: coleccionar revistas viejas. Una tarde en la que el chiquillo va a su clase para estudiar la ceremonia, ve que el rabino está absorto mirando una portada. En ella aparecen varias muchachas, pero una de ellas muy especial, diferente a las demás. En ese momento comienza la ardua tarea de localizar a esa joven que tan fascinados tiene al rabino y al chiquillo. Y sus pesquisas les llevan hasta la hija del fotógrafo que, sin saberlo, tiene una poderosa conexión con esa misteriosa de la portada.

Una historia de fantasmas realmente maravillosa.

OAKLAND DRAGON BLUES

Un policía de Oakland decide ayudar a un dragón extraviado a encontrar al escritor que creó su figura para tomar venganza sobre él ya que no acabó la historia y lo dejó atrapado en el mundo "real".

THE BRIDGE PARNTNER

Esta es una historia realmente inquietante: una historia sobre una asesina en serie. Mattie es una mujer ya entrada en edad a la que le asignan una nueva compañera de bridge (un juego de cartas). Esta nueva compañera parece tener tan mal perder que no puede dejar de repetirle por lo bajo que la va a matar. Mattie al principio no puede creer lo que oye, pero de repente parece que ve a Olivia (la compañera de juego) por todas partes. Un día, Mattie decide enfrentarse a Olivia y preguntarle por esa obsesión de decirle que la va a matar; y Olivia le cuenta que es una asesina en serie y que ha decidido que ella (Mattie) será su próxima víctima.

DIRAE

Siendo totalmente sincera, os confieso que no he entendido mucho de esta historia, y es que está construida en un monólogo casi sin sentido en la que hay una sucesión de acontecimientos caóticos que cuentan la historia de Dirae.

VANISHING

Beagle confiesa que esta historia le ha costado mucho, muchísimo esfuerzo. Durante años la ha reescrito decenas de veces hasta que al fin, le ha encontrado el "truquillo". Y la verdad, le ha quedado increíblemente bien:

El anciano Jansen había servido en el muro de Berlin durante algunos años. Ahora, mucho tiempo después de esos acontecimientos, se encuentra sentado en la sala de espera de la ginecóloga de su hija mayor. ¿O no? Porque de repente Jansen parece dormirse unos segundos y despertar en la desierta Berlin. Al principio parece ser la única persona que se encuentra allí, hasta que los recuerdos de un terrible acontecimiento se repiten ante sus ojos: la muerte de una muchacha que intentó saltar el mudo para pasar a la "otra" Alemania ...

THE WOMAN WHO MARRIED THE MAN IN THE MOON

Había esperado esta historia como agua de Mayo. Una nueva entrega de las andadas del mago Schmendrick en sus tiempos antes de su encuentro con el Unicornio, con el circo de Medianoche y con Molly.

Dos chiquillos (un niño y una niña) se han perdido por el bosque, cuando se topan con un Schmendrick que parece caer del cielo. Éste les promete que encontrará el camino de vuelta con su magia caótica que lo único que logra es perderlos un poquito más de lo que estaban. Pero la magia, una vez más, tiene sus propios caminos y finalmente logran llegar a la granja donde los espera una madre muy preocupada.

En señal de agradecimiento por haber cuidado de sus hijos extraviados, la madre (viuda) acoge esa noche a Schmendrick. Al ver que éste está atormentado por no encontrar el poder que en realidad habita dentro de él, ella decide contarle la historia de la mujer que se casó con el hombre que habita la luna ...

Y bien, aquí tenéis todas las historias. Un libro súper recomendable. Como siempre, Beagle es un genio de la palabra.

No tengo palabras para descrbir lo extremadamente bonito que es este cómic. Qué ilusión, encontrarme un 15 de febrero sobre mi escritorio ese magnífico paquete de Amazon.com, con una de las novelas gráficas más hermosas que haya podido admirar.

El volumen (en tapa dura), recopila los 6 cómics de la historia The Last Unicorn, novela original de Peter S. Beagle, adaptada al cómic por Peter B. Gillis; ilustrada por Renae de Liz y coloreada por su marido, Ray Dillon.

167 páginas a todo color que relatan la historia que muchos de nosotros ya conocíamos pero que hemos redescubierto y disfrutado por enésima vez, en este exlusivo y lujoso formato. Un libro grande, de calidad, cuidado y mimado hasta el más mínimo detalle. Los extras son fantásticos: páginas y páginas de ilustraciones extras (maravillosa la Amalthea de Mariah McCourt), una entrevista exclusiva y muy reveladora a Peter S. Beagle, otra entrevista al genio Gillis. Muchos extras, mucho color y, cómo no, una historia increíblemente hermosa.

Recomiendo, al 100%, la adquisición de un ejemplar de esta novela gráfica. ¡Maravilloso!

La novela gráfica The Last Unicorn entre los Best Sellers del New York Times

El New York Times nos dio una alegría tremenda cuando, el 15 de febrero del 2011 anunció que la nueva adaptación de uno de los trabajos más conocidos del autor Peter S. Beagle, había sido un éxito de ventas. La novela gráfica de The Last Unicorn (publicada por IDW) ha alcanzado, en su versión de tapa dura, el nº 2 de los top ventas de la semana.

Una vez más, gracias a Jose Gabriel hemos sabido que según los datos de DIAMONDS, los últimos tres números de una serie de 6 cómics que se publicaron en total, vendieron aproximadamente 4.000 ejemplares! Como bien apunta Jose Gabriel, es todo un logro para una pequeña editorial. Pero no se queda aquí, sino que además entró en el ranking de los Top 100 (en la posición 32) del mes de enero, sindo el único estreno que entra enseguida en el ranking y en una posición tan buena.

La edición en tapa dura que se comercializa desde principios de enero ha arrasado. superando incluso la mítica Buffy.

La adaptación de Peter B. Gillis, ilustrada por Renae De Liz y coloreada por Ray Dillon, publicada por IDW y supervisada por el mismísimo Peter S. Beagle está causando furor en el mundo del cómic.

No te quedes sin tu ejemplar; disfruta de la magia de Peter S. Beagle y de una de las novelas que, llevadas a la pequeña pantalla, ha robado el corazón de tantos niños y adultos.

Una nueva edición en Blu-Ray de la inmortal película The Last Unicorn

¿Pensabais que ya habíamos acabado por hoy con las buenas noticias? Pues no señores y señoritas, que hay algo más ... ¡La nueva edición de The Last Unicorn en Blu-Ray!

Pero no sólo es una edición normal y corriente, sino que viene acompañada de un bonito librito con ilustraciones del concurso de ilustraciones y obras de arte The Last Unicorn que tuvo lugar hace unos meses y del que hablamos largo y tendido en el artículo Al fin la lista de ganadores y menciones de honor del concurso de ilustración The Last Unicorn.

Un DVD remasterizado, high-definition widescreen video, con sonido mejorado y extras de lo más chulos: entrevistas a Peter S. Beagle, Connor Cochran, Jules Brass y Christopher Lee, galería de trabajos, "cómo se hizo"- el desarrollo de la película y ... ¡se acabó con la versión censurada! En este nuevo DVD están todos los "maldita sea" que se cortaron en la versión de televisión.

Sé que llevo un retraso enorme en cuanto a colgar posts. Debéis perdonarme, por favor, porque realmente me falta tiempo para estar al día. La tecnología hace avanzar la información a pasos agigantados y poder postear todo a su tiempo es prácticamente imposible.

Kandra Niagra, el Festival Renacentista de Texas y Peter S. Beagle

Un testimonio muy especial es éste de Kandra Niagra quien ha compartido con nosotros la experiencia de conocer a Peter S. Beagle en persona. Su relato es muy particular, ya que lo cuenta como si fuese extraído de una novela. Es una persona muy curiosa y espero que disfrutéis con sus palabras:

Peter S. Beagle, el autor de The Last Unicorn iba a firmar al Festival Renacentista de Texas.

The Dollmaker brought her beloved old copy of The Last Unicorn to be signed by the author.

One would have thought that it was the night before Christmas on the night before Peter S. Beagle's appearance....

La fabricante de muñecas iba a traer su propia copia de The Last Unicorn para que fuese firmada por el autor. Cualquiera habría dicho que era la vigilia de navidad, la noche antes de que Peter S. Beagle apareciese por el festival ...

Two of the most creative women the Dollmaker knows were bouncing like Jacks escaped from a Jack-in-the-Box... springing and rebounding off the walls of whatever room would contain them, in giddy anticipation of meeting the celebrated author of The Last Unicorn. Shandi, especially. Her childhood hero. Peter S. Beagle was the ONE who helped her, through his writings, to believe in her deepest magical self.

Dos de las mujeres más creativas que conozco, amigas de la fabricante de muñecas, saltaban de alegría ante la idea de conocer al ilustre autor de su novela favorita. Especialmente Shandi. Su héroe de la infancia. Peter S. Beagle era justo la persona que le ayudó a través de sus libros, a encontrarse con su yo más mágico.

Shandi opened up a fabric bag and gently lifted out a beautiful white Unicorn which she had made. She was going to bring the Unicorn to show HIM.

Shandi abrió una bolsa y sacó el precioso unicornio que ella misma había fabricado. Lo había traído para enseñarselo a él.

About an hour later, in the now near blinding blizzard of sweetness, partner Joyce showed up with another Unicorn-one that SHE had made to bring to the Great Author.

Una hora más tarde de aquél dulce encuentro, un compañero de Joyce apareció con otro unicornio, aquél que había fabricado para regalárselo al autor.

Well, the next day dawned like no other ever had, and the two of them: Shandi and Joyce, embarked, wrapped in scarves, criss-crossed by shoulder bags brimming with handmade Unicorns and rare drawings, and toting boxes of books to be signed, braving the chill winds, on a pilgrimage down the sidewalk like Heidi and Clara climbing the mountain to see Grandfather.

Bueno, la mañana siguiente amaneció como ninguna otra lo había hecho y Shandi y Joce, bien envueltas en sus bufandas y petrechadas con libros, unicornios y exóticas ilustraciones, se encaminaron al peregrinaje como Heidi y Clara hicieron para visitar al abuelito.

Well, photographs were taken, books were signed, Unicorns were tearfully bestowed and graciously accepted, friendships were forged, palms were read, and History was made, and the Ladies successfully navigated back to their shoppes without their feet ever touching the ground. Shandi stayed airborne throughout the day and happily chirped greetings to doll customers from cloud nine.

Muchas fotografías fueron tomadas, libros fueron firmados, unicornios admirados y regalados, amistades forjadas, manos leídas y la historia fue escrita. Las señoras volvieron a sus casetas, prácticamente levitando de alegría. Shandi estaba el resto del día en las nubes, recibiendo alabanzas por sus muñecas.

With Shandi grinning like the Cheshire Cat and hopping along beside her, the Dollmaker set off, down the sidewalk, to the Bookstore, with her faded and torn old copy of The Last Unicorn tucked under her arm. A few minutes later....

Con Shandi sonriendo como el gato Cheshire y yo saltando alegre a su lado, nos encaminamos a la librería, con una vieja copia de The Last Unicorn bajo el brajo. Unos minutos más tarde ...

There he was, just standing in the doorway. Himself. Peter S. Beagle.

Ahí estaba, justo en la puerta. Él mismo. Peter S. Beagle.

In the harsh early morning light he looked like any other fellow needing a cup of coffee. Why, he was quite ordinary, really, in a suave sophisticated British agent black motorcycle jacket kind of way... Even with his dashingly dark Inverness style cloak thrown on (like Sherlock Holmes, Sean Connery or Father Christmas would wear, with the attached shoulder cape), he was obviously still just a "regular guy".

En la fría mañana de aquél día, parecía uno más que necesitaba una taza de café. Parece una persona normal, con un toque de sofisticación británica, enfundado en su chaqueta de motorista. Además llevaba un mantón, como la de Scherlock Holmes, Sean Connery o Papá Noel).

The Dollmaker was delighted, but as she casually approached the famed author, she became aware of an increasing number of Adoring Fans swarming like flies at 8:15 in the morning.

Where were they coming from? The Dollmaker who thought she was early was obviously not early enough! Hey wait a minute!

La fabricante de muñecas estaba encantada, pero mientras se acercaba a él, empezaron a llegar un montón de fans histéricas, a las 8h15 de la mañana. ¿De dónde habían salido? La fabricante de muñecas que pensó había llegado muy pronto se dio cuenta de que en realidad no era así.

As the rising tide of Peter Beagle's devoted and mostly female Readership impinged upon the available space, the Dollmaker actually began to feel somewhat competitive, imagining herself playing a little ice hockey in there when one of the Bookstore owners, who hadn't even had time to sweep the floor yet, finally decided he had had enough, and used his broom effectively to disperse the yackety-yackety mob in the tiny Bookstore, banishing the Adoring Fans to the book-signing tent and in the ensuing confusion, for one moment Peter S. Beagle roamed free...

Cuando creció la cantidad de admiradoras femeninas al rededor de Peter S. Beagle, la fabricante de muñecas se imaginó en un partido de hokey. El suelo de la librería no había sido ni fregado, y los empleados comenzaron a dispersar a las fans. En ese momento de rifi rafe, Peter S. Beagle quedó libre ...

And then, Yikes! Suddenly he was right there in front of the Dollmaker and he turned to face her, and somebody- probably Shandi- was carrying out the introductions and the Dollmaker was holding out her gloved hand and the moment had come to say something witty, intelligent, or at least relevant to Peter S. Beagle...

Y de repente ahí estaba, justo en frente de la fabricante de muñecas, Peter S. Beagle. Había llegado el momento de decir algo importante, algo que permanecería en la memoria del ilustre autor.

But to the Dollmaker's horror... all that came out was a ridiculous girlish giggle... Oh no! And whatever else she was going to say was completely forgotten. Sigh. At least she got the book signed Peter S. Beagle.

Pero para horror de la fabricante de muñecas, lo único que salió de su boca era una risita nerviosa. Y todo cuanto querría haber dicho se había borrado de su mente. Al menos consiguió que le firmase el libro.

Hemos tenido la grandísima suerte de encontrar a dos personas más que han querido compartir con nosotros su experiencia conociendo en persona a Peter S. Beagle. Vamos a empezar con Joyce Hazlerig que en el Festival Renacentista de este año (2010), celebrado en Texas, topó una vez más con este emblemático escritor. No os perdáis ni una sola de sus palabras porque su relato es de lo más fascinante:

At the Texas Renaissance Festival where I work as a Tarot and Palm Reader, I heard that Peter S. Beagle was coming there and I have had the good fortune to meet him in the past and was very excited to see him again. He and his works are very close to my heart. I love the Last Unicorn and I love all the other worlds he’s created; I’ve been very moved to hear about Peter’s legal difficulties… and whenever I get the chance to tell other folks about him I do.

En el Festival Renacentista en Texas [2010], donde trabajo como tarotista y hago lectura de mano, oí que Peter S. Beagle iba a venir también. Siempre he tenido mucha suerte de encontrarme con él y volvía a llenarme de alegría saber que nos reencontraríamos. Él y sus obras están en mi corazón. Adoro El Último Unicornio y me encantan todos sus otros trabajos literarios; también me sensibiliza sus problemas legales ... y siempre que tengo la ocasión de contárselo a otros, lo comparto.

Since do palm readings at the faire I offered to read Peter’s hand and he said I was surprisingly accurate. His calm presence and dignity touch me and he was very engaged during the reading.

Como en la feria también ofrezco lectura de mano, le pregunté a Peter si le importaría que leyese la suya y así lo hice. Su presencia calmada y dignidad me impresionaron y estuvo muy atento a la lectura y todo cuanto le estaba diciendo.

I was also thrilled to be able to show him the Last Unicorn sculpture I created out of wool and silk. He said the eyes were just the right proportion. I can’t tell you how happy this made me.

También estaba encantada de poder mostrarle mi escultura de El Último Unicornio, que hice de algodón y seda. Me dijo que los ojos eran del tamaño exacto. No os podéis imaginar lo feliz que me hizo.

I joked with him because he was drinking hot apple cider and eating a pickle. I mean the cider I could understand it was pretty chilly for Texas in Nov, but I looked at him and said “really?”nodding at the pickle and he replied “Don’t ask. I like dark beer and chocolate chip cookies too.” I love hearing him speak, he shared a few stories with me about his time playing music at a French restaurant.

Bromeé con él porque estaba bebiendo sidra de manzana caliente mientras masticaba un pepinillo. A ver, podía entender lo de la sidra aunque me parece un poco picante para Texas en noviembre, pero aun así yo le miré y le dije "¿de verdad"?, mirando hacia el pepinillo, y él respondió "Mejor no preguntes. Tambíen me encanta la cerveza negra con galletas con pepitas de chocolate." Me encanta oírle hablar, y relató varias historias de cuando tocaba en un restaurante francés.

This was a wonderful time for me, I brought several friends with me who had never met him before and I felt privileged to witness their first time with Peter. My first time meeting him I cried like a tiny child; he has that profound effect on me.. and he patted my hand and said that it was alright he’s a big crier too. The next few times I wasn’t so weepy, once I even managed a joke. However, I do believe this experience tops all the others.

Fue una experiencia maravillosa. Traje a varios amigos míos que nunca le habían visto y me sentí privilegiada por poder presentarles a Peter. La primera vez que le vi, lloré como una niña pequeña; tiene ese profundo efecto sobre mí ... me tocaba el hombro y me decía que me entendía, que él también era un gran llorón. Las otras veces no estuve tan llorona, incluso una vez conseguí contarle un chiste. Sea como fuere, creo que esta experiencia es la mejor de cuantas he tenido.

Llevamos semanas hablando de la nueva colección de perfumes y esenicas inspiradas en The Last Unicorn. Hemos sabido por Terri Kempton de Conlan Press las sensaciones que despertaban en ella estos olores tan singulares, pero no sabíamos, hasta ahora, de qué se componían.

Gracias a la gazeta oficial de Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab al fin sabemos en qué se inspiraron para crear estos perfumes. Aquí la información que también podréis leer en : The Last Unicorn: Series I

THE LILAC WOOD (árboles atemporales, flores eternas, hierba brillante y sombras suaves)
It was always spring in her forest, because she lived there, and she wandered all day among the great beech trees, keeping watch over the animals that lived in the ground and under bushes, in nests and caves, earths and treetops. Generation after generation, wolves and rabbits alike, they hunted and loved and had children and died, and as the unicorn did none of these things, she never grew tired of watching them.

Ageless trees, everblooming flowers, brilliant grass, and soft shadows.

THE LAST UNICORN (pétalos helados de lila, raices de lirios, violetas, chocolate blanco, coco, sándalo blanco, entre otros)

The unicorn lived in a lilac wood, and she lived all alone. She was very old, though she did not know it, and she was no longer the careless color of sea foam, but rather the color of snow falling on a moonlit night. But her eyes were still clear and unwearied, and she still moved like a shadow on the sea.

Frosty lilac petals, iris pallida root, orris, violet leaf, white chocolate, coconut, wild lettuce, white sandalwood, and oakmoss.

THE BUTTERFLY (frijol marrón, ámbar dorado, bergamont y petigrain)
Then one afternoon the butterfly wobbled out of a breeze and lit on the tip of her horn. He was velvet all over, dark and dusty, with golden spots on his wings, and he was as thin as a flower petal. Dancing along her horn, he saluted her with his curling feelers. “I am a roving gambler. How do you do?”

Fuzzy brown tonka bean, golden amber, bergamot, and petitgrain.

THE MIDNIGHT CARNIVAL (crueldad y confinamiento, magia menor e ilusiones por un penique: mirra, teca, narcisos, pachouli, cacao, lavanda y musgo negro, entre otros)

There were nine wagons, each draped in black, each drawn by a lean black horse, and each baring barred sides like teeth when the wind blew through the black hangings. The lead wagon was driven by a squat old woman, and it bore signs on its shrouded sides that said in big letters: MOMMY FORTUNA’S MIDNIGHT CARNIVAL. And below, in smaller print: Creatures of night, brought to light.

Cruelty and confinement, small magics and penny illusions: galbanum, teak, myrrh, narcissus, patchouli, cacao, labdanum, agarwood, lavender, neroli, and black moss.

THE NINTH CAGE (mezcla claustrofóbica de hierro y roble)
The unicorn hardly heard him. She turned and turned in her prison, her body shrinking from the touch of the iron bars all around her. No creature of man’s night loves cold iron, and while the unicorn could endure its presence, the murderous smell of it seemed to turn her bones to sand and her blood to rain. The bars of her cage must have had some sort of spell on them, for they never stopped whispering evilly to one another in clawed, pattering voices.

A claustrophobic blend of iron and oak.

ARACHNE OF LYDIA (suave marrón y tyrian púrpura: grosella negra y algo polvoriento)

Rukh was standing before a cage that contained nothing but a small brown spider weaving a modest web across the bars. “Arachne of Lydia,” he told the crowd. “Guaranteed the greatest weaver in the world — her fate’s the proof of it. She had the bad luck to defeat the goddess Athena in a weaving contest. Athena was a sore loser, and Arachne is now a spider, creating only for Mommy Fortuna’s Midnight Carnival, by special arrangement. Warp of snow and woof of flame, and never any two the same. Arachne.”

Strung on the loom of iron bars, the web was very simple and almost colorless, except for an occasional rainbow shiver when the spider scuttled out on it to put a thread right. But it drew the onlookers’ eyes — and the unicorn’s eyes as well — back and forth and steadily deeper, until they seemed to be looking down into great rifts in the world, black fissures that widened remorselessly and yet would not fall into pieces as long as Arachne’s web held the world together. The unicorn shook herself free with a sigh, and saw the real web again. It was very simple, and almost colorless.

“It isn’t like the others,” she said. “No,” Schmendrick agreed grudgingly. “But there’s no credit due to Mommy Fortuna for that. You see, the spider believes. She sees those cat’s-cradles herself and thinks them her own work. Belief makes all the difference to magic like Mommy Fortuna’s. Why, if that troop of witlings withdrew their wonder, there’d be nothing left of all her witchery but the sound of a spider weeping. And no one would hear it.”

Soft brown and Tyrian purple: dusty clove and blackcurrant.

MOMMY FORTUNA (cariño, pólvora, magia por dos peniques)

When the first wagon drew even with the place where the unicorn lay asleep, the old woman suddenly pulled her black horse to a stop. All the other wagons stopped too and waited silently as the old woman swung herself to the ground with an ugly grace. Gliding close to the unicorn, she peered down at her for a long time, and then said, “Well. Well, bless my old husk of a heart. And here I thought I’d seen the last of them.” Her voice left a flavor of honey and gunpowder on the air. “If he knew,” she said and she showed pebbly teeth as she smiled. “But I don’t think I’ll tell him.”

Honey, gunpowder, and pleonectic, twopenny magics.

Como bien dicen en la gazeta, éste es el primero de cuatro sets que componen la colección The Last Unicorn. Cada tres meses saldrá un nuevo set, con siete esencias cada uno. Return, una historia del mundo de The Inkeeper's Song

Quien no haya leído antes la novela The Inkeeper's Song, no llegará a entender muchos de los detalles, descripciones y la situación en general de este pequeño tomo que encierra una de las aventuras más importantes del viajero y mercenario errante Soukyan.

Sin desvelar demasiado la trama, os cuento la situación: Soukyan (quien tras los hechos acaecidos en The Inkeeper's Song) se ha separado de Lal y Lukassa para continuar su camino de viajero errante que huye de los "Hunters" (los perseguidores asesinos), enviados de "that place" (ese sitio) del que años atrás escapó. Siempre son tres los que vienen a buscarle para asesinarlo, siempre son tres los que mueren en el intento, pero siempre habrá otros tres que les seguirán, y otros, muchos otros. Hasta ahora. Soukyan se topa con una nueva tropa, pero algo es distinto: logra matar en cuestión de segundos al primero y observa cómo el tercero está asesinando al segundo, para luego salir huyendo. Soukyan no lo comprende, jamás ha visto un comportamiento similar en los asesinos; jamás se han matado entre ellos. Por eso, decide perseguir al tercero, darle caza, para descubrir el por qué de ese repentino cambio. Finalmente logra alcanzarlo y éste, estando moribundo sólo le susurra palabras casi ininteligibles ... "el árbol".
.
Sin haber tenido oportunidad de sonsacarle nada más, decide, intrigadísimo, volver a "ese sitio" para descubrir qué ha cambiado. Utilizando la magia, vuelve a adobtar el cuerpo de Nyataneri y se pone en marcha para volver de donde huyó, del sitio al que jamás iba a retornar. Y la sorpresa que le espera, es más grande de lo que imaginaba. El gran misterio de la procedencia, entrenamiento y el odio de los asesinos que dan caza a Soukyan, es revelado al fin, en este libro.

Una historia muy esperada que nos desvela una parte importante de la vida de uno de los personajes más emblemáticos de The Inkeeper's Song. También nos hace pensar que vendrán otras.

Una bellísima edición firmada por el autor, con cuatro ilustraciones en su interior, creadas por Maurizio Manzieri.

Ya os había comentado en el artículo Los perfumes de The Last Unicorn : ¡hay 28 diferentes! que el famoso laboratorio de perfumes Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab estaba creando una nueva gama de esencias inspiradas en la novela The Last Unicorn.

A través de la última newsletter The Raven hemos sabido que ya está disponible el primer pack de esencias que se compone de : Lilac Wood, The Last Unicorn, The Butterfly, Mommy Fortuna, The Midnight Carnival, The Ninth Cage, and Arachne of Lydia.

Según Terri Kempton, de Conlan Press, ésto es a lo que huelen:

LILAC WOOD — This sensual scent transports you to a wild forest. It smells like a thousand crushed flowers and something untamed. Far from a plain lilac scent, it has complex floral notes that mellow over time into soft sweet warm tones. It should be an instant hit with women who like floral scents but are looking for something fresh and new. (It was definitely a favorite of our testers and their families!)

THE LAST UNICORN — When I think of the Unicorn herself I envision a combination of strength, beauty, and fragility. This scent has all of that. ARACHNE OF LYDIA — I've always been fond of the spider in the Midnight Carnival, and how she whole-heartedly believed in her world of illusion. A cool blend of rich, juicy heart notes with a deep layer of hidden bite underneath, this perfume is unbelievable...how can a scent be this wonderfully creepy and deliciously wearable at the same time? My favorite thing about it is the way the darker scent mellows and fades over the course of the day, leaving a sweeter and sweeter aroma behind (not unlike walking away from a spider, weeping).

MOMMY FORTUNA — A character with power, age, and a heart so dry she cries sand instead of blood. Return al fin en mis manos

Al fin tengo el tan esperado RETURN en mis manos y es una edición cuquísima. Aunque no estoy muy de acuerdo con el precio, que me parece excesivo para un libro de 101 páginas. Pero por otro lado, ha sido ilustrado por un gran artista (Maurizio Manzieri) y se trata de una edición firmada.

Os dejo con las fotos y cuando me haya leído con tranquilidad la historieta, os cuento más ;)

Vaya, un poquito tarde me entero de que se organizó un concurso de dibujo The Last Unicorn; ésto me pasa por no haber comprado todavía los cómics (que me estoy esperando a que salgan todos para que me los puedan enviar todos de una y ahorrar en gastos de envío).

Pues bien, parece ser que con los primeros números se anunció un concurso de dibujo The Last Unicorn que tenía fecha límite mañana mismo, es decir, el 1 de Octubre. ¿Qué podéis ganar? Avances con el cómic The Last Unicorn

Peter y Connor han anunciado cómo van los avances de impresión y publicación del cómic The Last Unicorn. Además, nos complacen con algunas imágenes que quieren compartir con todo el mundo, imágenes preciosas de los distintos números.

Pero también comentan que han habido problemas con la previsión de páginas que iban a tener los cómics. Concretamente se han quedado cortos de páginas con lo que el equipo artístico, Peter y los que conforman Conlan Press solicitaron a la editorial IDW que se ampliaran las páginas sin recargo en el precio de venta del número. IDW no accedió, con lo que Peter y Conlan Press correrán con el gasto extra de papel e imprenta.

IDW LAST UNICORN COMICS UPDATE

— ISSUE #3 has been printed, and orders will ship out just as soon as Conlan Press gets copies in from IDW.

— ISSUE #4 is finished and will be coming in from the printer soon. Ibid. on the shipping.

— ISSUE #5 has been finished and sent to the printer. This issue has 26 pages of story and art instead of the usual 22.

— ISSUE #6 pencils are done, with inks and colors in progress, and the last bits of script are being written right now. This final issue has 28 pages of story and art instead of the usual 22.
As you'll see in the sample pages below, Renae De Liz and Ray Dillon have gotten better and better (and better!) with every issue. They've done an extraordinary job of bringing The Last Unicorn to life, and Peter S. Beagle couldn't be happier with their work, or with Peter Gillis's marvelously inventive-yet-faithful adaptation.

But a serious problem cropped up with issues 5 and 6. You see, IDW has a strict 22-page limit on the number of story pages they'll put in a given comic book. This isn't because more pages aren't available (each comic is 32 pages long, after all) but because IDW's internal budgets won't stretch to pay for any extra writing or art...which would normally be okay, but from the beginning both Peter Beagle and Peter Gillis had doubts that The Last Unicorn would fit neatly into six 22-page chunks.

They were right. It didn't. Even with certain critical bits of streamlining, the 22-page versions of issues 5 and 6 butchered the story.

Everyone involved agreed that four more pages were needed in issue 5, and six more pages in issue 6 (and we do mean everybody: Peter B, Peter G, Connor, Renae & Ray, even the book's editor at IDW, Mariah Huehner).

Only IDW wasn't willing to go over budget and cover the additional $3,000 it would cost to pay Peter Gillis, Renae De Liz, and Ray Dillon to produce those 10 vital pages.

Faced with choosing between crappy last issues and Really Good Ones, Peter Beagle and Connor put their hands up in the air and volunteered to cover the extra cost themselves. Which they are now doing, believing it both worthwhile and absolutely necessary.

Pues los nuevos perfumes creados por Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab lo harán posible, porque han creado una línea de esencias inspiradas en la novela The Last Unicorn. Hay 28 perfumes diferentes, todos inspirados en esta inolvidable historia llena de magia y aventuras.

Aquí el texto que anuncia el lanzamiento:

After much consultation and testing, Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab has conceived a line of 28 different Last Unicorn scents. The first seven are coming out now, with three more sets of seven to be released over the next year. Taken all together they track the book's storyline from start to finish, beginning with Lilac Wood and ending with True Magic. This strikes us as very cool, not to mention something brand new in the scent/aromatic oils world (at least to our knowledge).

The first selection consists of Lilac Wood, The Last Unicorn, The Butterfly, Mommy Fortuna, The Midnight Carnival, The Ninth Cage, and Arachne of Lydia. Label art is being completed now, and the first run will ship in mid-October. The next selection, which includes Schmendrick, Molly Grue, Magic Do As You Will and four others, is set for release on December 1st.

You can place orders right now at the Conlan Press website. Each 5ml bottle costs $26, or for $38.50 you can buy a sampler which offers all seven scents in 1/32ml containers. Septiembre trae muchas cosas súper positivas consigo: muchas publicaciones muy muy esperadas. Entre ellas está RETURN, la última novela de Peter S. Beagle que en el mes de los "nuevos comienzos" por excelencia, verá la luz en EEUU.

Todavía no se sabe nada de nada sobre esta novela, más que es la continuación (y final) de su predecesora The Inkeeper's Song, que a su vez es la favorita no sólo del autor mismo, sino de muchos de sus lectores, y a raiz de la cual nacieron tantas otras historias cortas que dieron para mucho (hasta para una obra de teatro!!!).

Pues bien, lo único que sabemos de la novela es ésto y que se trata de una edición limitadísima, ilustrada por nada más y nada menos que Maurizio Manzieri, quien vive en Turín (Italia) y que lleva a sus espaldas una importante carrera artística con sus ilustraciones bellísimas llenas de fantasía y colorido. Os adelanto que el Sr. Manzieri ha aceptado muy amablemente concedernos una pequeña entrevista en cuanto haya salido el libro a la venta y compartirá con nosotros la experiencia de haber ilustrado una de las novelas de uno de los escritores más renombrados y queridos de los EEUU.

Hasta entonces, tendremos que seguir siendo pacientes y recordar que falta muy poco para poder tener este libro en nuestras manos.

La asociación CCYW celebra su primera convención con un invitado estrella

Peter S. Beagle y Jamie Redford, dos autores galardonados, escritores, músicos y directores de películas, encabezan la primera conferencia de jóvenes escritores en el norte de California.

CCYW (Capitol City Young Writers) celebró su primer convención anual en California para jóvenes escritores, el pasado 17 de julio en la escuala San Domenico en San Anselm. Se trata de una organización sin ánimo de lucro que pretende promover, educar e inspirar a los jóvenes escritores. En ésta conferencia se pretendía dar una pequeña formación en diversos aspectos escritorios, hablando sobre los distintos géneros (ficción, no ficción, poesía, memorias, guiones, canciones y mucho más) visto desde el punto de vista de profesionales que se dedican a ello.

Ésta conferencia dio la oportunidad a los jóvenes asistentes de poner a prueba sus habilidades, haciendo prácticas de lecturas, talleres y concursos literarios.

En esta primera conferencia, Peter S. Beagle (autor de la novela The Last Unicorn) y el productor James Redford, encabezaron esta inicitiva, exponiendo los ejemplos de muchos escritores como Leah Garchic, Deborah Grabien y Nick Petrulakis, entre otros.

Parece que la conferencia fue todo un éxito porque ya está programada la siguiente para el próximo año.

We knew when this started that there would only be 20 performances in this run: now the last two nights are here.

If you live within reach of San Francisco and want to see the show, there are still some seats available for Saturday, but they're getting thin. That headline pretty much tells the tale.

John is a longtime fan of The Last Unicorn, and a few months back he got in touch about doing an illustrated edition of that book. Such a project may yet happen (the rights are complicated) but in the meantime John is cheerfully leaping in to do Two Hearts instead. [John Howe es fan de The Last Unicorn y solicitó ilustrar esta novela. Exactly how long it will take him to finish his contribution isn't clear, because he's working on these new drawings while also spending 60-70 hours a week designing the upcoming feature film version of The Hobbit. But he has said he thinks he can have them done by September...and if he's right, then the previously-delayed book (and the associated Last Unicorn audiobook) will be shipping before the end of the year. PETER REJECTED (?!?) AS GUEST BY DRAGON*CON

Quite a few people have emailed asking if Peter would be at Dragon*Con again this year, and folks from two of the convention's programming tracks inquired about possibly having him participate. Despite that, and despite how popular he has been there in the past, this year Dragon*Con turned Peter down as a guest. [Peter no asistirá en el próximo DragonCon ya que la organización ha "rechazado" su participación. ¿Por qué? Dios sabrá... la contestación es algo extraña, ya que dan a entender que por temas de "best fit" (el que más se adecúa). We don't know why. All we got by way of explanation was a generic rejection email. It read as follows:

"Due to the tremendous number of applications received each year, the Guest Committee must often make difficult decisions regarding which applicants are accepted for guest status at the convention. The quality and quantity of the applications makes the task a challenging one. A wide variety of factors are considered when making this determination, including which applicants have an overall 'best fit' for the convention. As with any organization, our resources are not limitless and while we would like to extend guest status to your client, we are unable to do so at this time. Unfortunately, due to the number of applications, we are unable to provide specific details behind all declines.

"We wish your client the very best in future pursuits, artistic or otherwise. We do hope that you will apply again in the future.

"Sincerely, The Dragon*Con Guest Committee"

It's their convention, of course, and they can do as they please. But since Peter would have paid his own way (Dragon*Con hasn't taken care of flights or a hotel room for him since the first year) it's hard to know what "resources" they're talking about. And after looking at the official approved guest list, we can't help but wonder why some of those people rated and Peter didn't.
Ah well.

To those of you hoping to see Peter in Atlanta this year, sorry to disappoint. Maybe the convention committee will look at things differently in 2011.

THREE UPDATES

1) Those very last EXTRA-DELUXE LAST UNICORN hardcovers — the ones with Peter's three handwritten pages and Connor's personalized unicorn sketch — are finally back on track, after a long delay caused by Peter's novel deadlines and Connor's getting buried in four straight months of 90-hour workweeks. All of that is easing as summer progresses, thank goodness, so Peter and Connor expect that all the remaining copies will be completed and shipped by mid-August.

2) The second issue of IDW's comic book adaptation of The Last Unicorn is currently scheduled to come in from the printer at the beginning of August, and will start shipping out to customers and subscribers after that. Customers who ordered signed or personalized copies, please allow some additional time for Peter to do that.

3) The year-long writing phase of Peter's 52/50 Project is now over, and the recording phase has begun. Peter will be recording 10 of these pieces by himself (or with selected backup musicians). The other 43 are going to be recorded by other folks. We've always hoped to get a really interesting mix of talented unknowns and Very Famous People for the Project, and that certainly looks like what is going to happen thanks to the help of long-time Beagle fan Anne Cecere, who also happens to be Director of Film and TV Relations for BMI. Anne has graciously agreed to join in and help us with the casting and recruiting process. Thanks, Anne!

ITALIAN DAYS

[Last month Peter traveled to Piacenza, in the Emilia-Romagna section of Northern Italy, where he was one of the featured guests of the 6th Annual Blues Festival Piacenza (which, despite its name, is an event dedicated both to Mississippi Delta Blues and literature; one of the other American writer guests this year was Joe R. Lansdale). It was Peter's first time in Italy in over 50 years, and to mark the occasion he'd like to share a letter he wrote last year to Nicola Manuppelli, the translator for the new Italian edition of I See By My Outfit.]

Dear Nicola:

I'm writing this as a letter, not a formal essay, for which I literally don't have the time. I'm off to Los Angeles this weekend, ostensibly for business meetings and an antique-paperback collectors' convention, but mainly to visit my favorite cousin, who's going in for surgery for a brain aneurysm very shortly. We grew up together (this is the half-Mexican side of the family), and I'm terrified at the thought of possibly losing her, and trying not to show it. I'll stay with her and her husband for a couple of nights, come back on the 30th, and then take off with Connor on 1 April for about a week and a half in Central Texas, promoting the new story collection.

Anyway.

I was in Italy twice during 1959 and 1960: the first time as a tourist, taking a train from Paris to Naples to meet the old poet Louis Untermeyer and his wife Bryna Ivens, who had sort of adopted me when I was about 15 and had submitted a story to Seventeen magazine, where Bryna was the fiction editor. She didn't take the story, but got curious enough to track me down in the Bronx (which was difficult, because I'd forgotten to put a return address on the envelope...) They used to invite me for weekends to their home in Connecticut, where I'd meet their neighbors — writers and artists like Norman Mailer, William Styron, Charles Jackson, Jay Williams, the young jazz pianist Amy Duncan (who was closer to my age); Arthur Miller — and, yes, his new wife Marilyn Monroe — all of whom treated me like a real writer, and were astonishingly kind and patient with me. I've never forgotten any of them.

I found the Untermeyers aboard a cruise ship in Naples, and we spent a day visiting Pompeii and Herculaneum together, and had dinner on the ship. Bryna urged me to return to Paris by way of Firenze, because she had an old friend there named Juliette Mullins. Juliette turned out to have a beautiful 16-year-old daughter named Maggie — her ex-husband was Italian — and I fell gloriously in love with her and spent as much time as I could at 10 via S. Egidio, where they lived. To this day I associate the smell of jasmine entirely with that house; you could find the place at midnight by the smell of Juliette's garden. Jasmine and Maggie...

Maggie kissed me goodbye at the train station, and I stood all the way to Paris — the train was so crowded that I never did find a seat — simply glowing with romance. We wrote to each other all winter, and in the spring I took train again, this time straight to Firenze, where I stayed for a month at a small albergo near the station. Maggie's mother Juliette was a theatre person — and a theatrical one — whose house I remember as something of a salon for writers and directors, both Italian and American. She and I even attempted to write a musical comedy together, which gave me an excuse to spend more time with Maggie. When I wasn't at 10 via S. Egidio, I walked the streets and bridges of Firenze, running into an American friend who was studying at Oxford, not to mention La Principessa...I spoke next to no Italian, but the Italians I met were so delighted that I was even trying that they always carried three-fourths of the conversation, and congratulated me on my fluency. The weather was perfect; a three-course dinner at any trattoria cost about 500 lira — which was something like eighty cents in those days; and I bought a motorscooter!

She was a Lambretta 150li, her name was Marinette — after the Brassens song — and I conducted the entire negotiation in Italian! And probably got cheated out of my socks, but that didn't matter: I was truly a sophisticated international world traveler, able to hold his own in two — no, make that three — languages. I broke her in my setting myself little journeys up and down the peninsula to places like Siena and Spoleto; even as far as Venice, where I parked Marinette on the outskirts of town and wandered in total ignorance and bewilderment, being far too ill-educated to understand what I was looking at. (No gondolas, though I do recall taking vaporettos.) But the town I really remember is Perugia...

See, coming from Firenze, I always entered Perugia coming down a steep hill with a traffic light at the bottom. But the light, for some reason, was hung so high above the crossing that I never remembered it was there, and almost always sailed right through it. And each time I did, this same policeman would leap out from his hiding place behind the beaded curtain of a corner grocery and blow his whistle at me. Half the time I'd have forgotten to keep my passport with me; and even though he knew perfectly well that I was a simple foolish wet-behind-the-ears American tourist, he'd always insist on calling my hotel for identification. The teenage operator would almost always be on the phone to her boyfriend, so we'd have to wait until the line was free. I began to feel very sorry for him, since he so forlornly wanted me to be an international criminal whose arrest would get him out of that damned grocery for good. Once I remember him mumbling to himself, "Strano, strano...molto strano..." I caught that much, and was able to phrase in Italian, "What is so strano about me? I am what I seem, nothing more!" His response: "I know. That's what's so strano..."

Finally, bidding a reluctant farewell to Maggie (whom I have never seen again, though she once sent me a sweet, regretful poem in Italian), I set forth on Marinette for the Alps and France beyond. I made it as far as Milan, where I bought a windscreen for the scooter; a kindly stranger helped me to put it on. Then I looked around for signs to Domodossola...and realized quickly that I was totally lost. There are cities I cannot ever find my way out of — Boston is one, as is Toledo, Ohio...and Milan is definitely another. I went round and round in increasing confusion, until finally I pulled up to a traffic light next to an enormous truck, and called up to the driver, "Perdone, signor — ma dov'e la strada per Domodossola?"

*He began to answer me in Italian; then realized I'd pretty well exhausted my vocabulary — and pulled out a roadmap and began to show me different routes to my goal. I understood his gestures and expressions well enough to realize that he was showing me, first, the swiftest road — "but they'd never let your Lambretta on that one, lousy cops" — then the prettiest — "but it'll wake you way out of your way" — then the one where I'd see the prettiest village girls on bicycles — "but if you're in a hurry..." Meanwhile the light was changing constantly, traffic was piling up behind us for blocks, people were honking their horns and screaming...but he ignored them all, determined to get me safely to Domodossola. Finally he settled on a satisfactory route, pointed it out on the map, went over it with me two or three times, to make sure...and then drove off with a wave to me and an extremely ancient gesture to the hysterical drivers behind us. And I headed for Domodossola.

Made it too, despite almost freezing to death that first night out. When I reached Interlaken, where I spent the night, a couple of hotel workers literally had to pry my hands off Marinette's handlebars. They piled every spare quilt in the hotel on me, and I slept for something like twelve hours. But I was on my way the next day, and was well into France (in those pre-euro days, of course, you had to change your currency at each border) when I committed the faux pas of trying to pass a French truck on a two-lane road. The driver caught sight of me in his rear-view mirror...looked back...plainly couldn't believe that a tiny Lambretta had visions of passing him...and then grinned cheerfully and pulled further and further to his left, actually running me off the road. I ended up in a ditch, with Marinette on top of me, discovering that at least I could swear in three languages. I was pinned there until an Italian family, heading home from vacation, spotted me, stopped their little car and rushed to help. It was Mama and Papa and their grown son: the men got the scooter off me and checked it for any damage (miraculously, none), while Mama pulled my shirt off and prowled around me, clucking indignantly as she pulled thorns out of my back. Papa brought out a silver flask and insisted on my having a couple of shots of cognac before they set me on the road, having made certain that both Marinette and I were functional. Then they watched as I took off, and waved to me all the way down the road, until we passed out of each others' lives forever...

I love Italians.

Benjamin Wachs, crítico de SF Weekly, ha colgado recientemente en la revista digital su crítica sobre la obra de teatro Giant Bones.

Aquí su reseña:

Desde luego, en la premiere de Giant Bones es donde todo podía irse al traste. Se trata de un juego interactivo entre los personajes. Está plagado de personajes, elementos y animales; es pura fantasía. Cuesta un poco seguirle la pista a los personajes, quienes dentro de la misma obra, interpretan diferentes carácteres y algunos llevan nombres como Blond Ingénue (rubio ingénuo) y Brown Ingénue (marrón ingénuo). ¿Intimidado? Más bien intrigado: y es que funciona.

Giant Bones es una de las pocas obras que con tanto elemento complicado, funcionan perfectamente. El conjunto compuesto por un puñado de fábulas, es fácil de seguir. El script, basado en las historias de Peter S. Beagle, es simpático, gracioso, y profundo (en este mismo orden), y se nota que los actores se divierten devorando a sus personajes desde el primer acto, haciéndolos funcionar con mucha habilidad hasta el final.

El decorado es minimalista pero evoca muchísimo. El sonido sencillamente magnífico. Bueno, hacía demasiado calor en el teatro, pero es la única pega que le puedo encontrar ya que la obra en sí te hace olvidar pronto ese bochorno. Os recomiendo que guardéis los programas para demostrar a todo el mundo que habéis asistido. Además: os regalarán una edición limitada de un libro de Beagle. ¿Veis? ¡Giant bones vale la pena!

Entrevista a Peter S. Beagle, por Diane Frkan de Port Iris

Gracias a Po rt Iris podemos disfrutar de la última entrevista publicada en internet. Con datos muy recientes (ya que fue realizada en la ConFusion 2010) nos volvemos a zambullir en el mundo beageliano con algunas novedades de lo más frescas:

Peter S. Beagle es mundialmente conocido por su fantástica novela The Last Unicorn. Además es un autor con mucho talento que tiene multitud de guiones, es músico y además, escribe canciones. Desde muy temprana edad recibió el reconocimiento nacional por sus escritos. Mientras estaba en el instituto, Peter se sorprendió cuando, sin saber que su profesor le había presentado a un concurso, recibió el premio The Scholastic Writing Award. Al parecer, su profesor de inglés acertó tomando esta decisión ya que esto le reportó su primer galardón. Desde entonces, ha recibido otros reconocimientos, entre ellos un Hugo y un Nebula Award por su novela Two Hearts además del Inkpot Award por su gran labor en la ciencia ficción y la fantasía.

Tenemos el placer de entrevistar a Peter junto a su representante y amigo, Connor Cochran.

Diane Frkan (Port Iris): Este último año se pudo ver por vez primera desde 1982, la película The Last Unicorn en un teatro. Según la información de la que dispongo, fue todo un éxito. ¿Puedes hablarnos de la experiencia?

Peter S. Beagle: Fue una experiencia remarcable ya que fue la primera vez en mucho tiempo que pude disfrutar de la película en al pantalla grande. Las últimas veces que tuve el placer de esa experiencia fue antes de su lanzamiento mundial y luego en Santa Cruz. Y entonces ya estaba contentísimo por diversas razones: el teatro estaba lleno hasta la bandera (cosa que no me esperaba), además de ser consciente de que ver una película en la gran pantalla es algo totalmente diferente a verla en vídeo. Había olvidado algunos elementos, conversaciones y pequeños detalles en diálogos y la música que había echado tanto de menos. El sonido era mil veces mejor de lo que recordaba. Me decía a mi mismo "Oh Dios mío, esto es un clásico", cosa que jamás sospeché que acabaría diciendo de alguien como Rankin and Bass Production.

DF: ¿Cómo crees que ha sobrellevado la película el paso del tiempo?

PSB: Creo que bastante bien. Me gusta más con cada vez que la vuelvo a ver. Sé qué salió mal y qué podría haber cambiado o haber hecho de forma distinta, tal como dijo el productor Arthur Ranking, cuando nos vimos en Nueva York. Él deseaba tener más presupuesto para mejorar algunos de los elementos. Sea como fuere, ha pasado mucho tiempo desde entonces y ya no estoy tan horrorizado por el hecho de que Ranking and Bass hicieran la película. Me ha alegrado volver a verla y creo que ha envejecido mucho mejor que yo (risas).

DF: Algunas fuentes afirman que tu novela Summerlong se publicará en el 2010, pero parece que este proyecto lleve ya mucho tiempo en marcha. ¿Nos puedes comentar el por qué?

PSB: Ante todo, necesitaba mucho trabajo. Y después, fue aceptado primero por Simon&Schuster para luego ser rechazado porque el editor me pedía una serie de cambios que yo no podía llevar a cabo. Y que conste que soy muy bueno con los editores; soy paciente y flexible y todo un profesional. Pero lo que me pedían era simplemente imposible. Llegué a ese punto en el que mi mente tardó sólo 10 segundos en darse cuenta que iba a atentar contra uno de los principios básicos que me había impuesto, además de que el editor quería un libro totalmente diferente. No iba a funcionar. No me explico cómo no nos dimos cuenta antes. Entre ésto y el tener otros proyectos en marcha, necesitaba un tiempo para dejarlo reposar y volver más adelante. Ahora es cuestión de escribir un capítulo después de otro. La mayor parte ya está escrita. El grueso de trabajo se centra en el final de la obra, los últimos capítulos. Le tengo mucho cariño a esta novela.

DF: ¿Entonces, se publicará en primavera/verano?

Connor Cochran: Intentaremos tener el libro acabado para finales de marzo. El 99% ya está acabado. Lo que queda de trabajo por hacer es acabar el último capítulo. Si podemos tenerlo listo para marzo, lo podremos publicar para verano a través de Common Press y el año que viene, por Tachyon.

DF a CC: ¿Puedes explicarnos lo que haces para el Sr. Beagle?

CC: Soy el representante de Peter y nos reímos de un montón de cosas juntos. Aunque bromee con el asunto, soy su editor, agente, representante y a menudo, su protector, entre otras cosas. Intento resolver todos sus problemas y que el trabajo siga su curso. También le animo a emprender nuevos proyectos.

PSB: Él es la razón por la que tengo tres colecciones de relatos, de camino a una cuarta próximamente, cosa que nunca había sospechado que haría.

DF: ¿Puedes compartir tu experiencia asistiendo al ConFusion? ¿Qué opinas de nosotros en Michigan?

PSB: Ha sido una experiencia increíble. La palabra que he utilizado para describir mi experiencia, durante todo este día, ha sido "spoiled" (estropeado). Estropeado y mimado en exceso y no puedo dejar de utilizar esta expresión con relación a las convenciones. En general, lo he pasado muy bien, pero quizás más porque ésta era pequeñita y que yo estuviese sólo con otro escritor más como invitado de honor. Caí rendido en la cama después de esta convención.

DF: Durante la ceremonia de inauguración, la otra autora invitada de honor, Cat Valente, reveló cómo había empezado su carrera de escritora (en gran parte porque usted estaba presente). Usted se sorprendió mucho ante lo que nos contó y los demás estábamos al borde de las lágrimas. ¿Qué sintió?

PSB: Es cierto. No recordaba lo que había pasado entonces en Davis, California. Hacía mucho tiempo que no había estado allí. Resulta que ambos nos habíamos mudado a vivir allí en el mismo período de tiempo e inevitablemente debimos conocernos en algún momento, nuestros caminos debieron cruzarse, pero no logro recordarlo.

Cuando pensé detenidamente en ello, recordé el instituto Davis High y sé que di conferencias (de forma gratuita). Siempre daré conferencias y charlas gratuitas a centros educativos, porque es algo importante. Así es como despierto su interés por la literatura y la escritura, hablándoles desde que son muy jóvenes sobre ser escritor.

Fue estupendo. Tuvimos tiempo de hablar de muchas cosas. Fue una sensación maravillosa. Evidentemente, han habido tantos otros escritores que tuvieron el mismo efecto sobre mí [como yo sobre ella]. Por eso lo haces lo mejor que puedes, porque no hay recompensa mayor que este tipo de gente.

DF: ¿Hay algo más que quieras añadir?

PSB: Invitarme de nuevo. Me lo he pasado de maravilla, y lo digo como alguien que no ha estado aquí en los últimos 49 años.

DF: Por supuesto sabes que eres miembro de ConFusion de por vida.

PSB: Lo que necesito es una suscripción de por vida a billetes de avión (risas).

DF: Trabajaremos en ello. Ya se nos ocurrirá algo.

CC: Si todo sale según lo previsto para este año (crucemos los dedos), habremos logrado algo muy grande. Más que ningún otro autor, (Peter) ha estado metido en muchísimos proyectos, con multitud de frentes abiertos (sobre todo con editores y estudios/productoras). Ha sido mucho trabajo el luchar contra y por todo ello, pero al fin vemos que los problemas se van solucionando y que para el 2011, Peter obtendrá lo que se merece y así podrá respirar al fin tranquilo y dedicar más tiempo a hacer cosas divertidas en su vida.

Peter Soyer Beagle, ganador de un Hugo y un Nebula Award, es conocido por diversas novelas que han pasado a formar parte de los clásicos contemporáneos de la literatura fantástica. Títulos como The Last Unicorn, A fine and a private place, Tamsin y The Inkeeper's Song, son sólo algunos de los más conocidos.

Pero este magnífico autor tiene muchas otras obras, quizás no tan famosas, pero igualmente brillantes. Vamos a hacer un pequeño repaso de las publicaciones más antiguas, pasando por las más recientes y, cómo no, los futuros proyectos que están por llegar. La calidad literaria permanece indiscutible y la cantidad de temas distintos sobre los que escribe Beagle son numerosos. Este incansable autor tiene relatos de todo tipo: fantasmas, animales parlantes, reyes, unicornios, brujas, seres fabulosos, pintores ... ¡hasta sobre la mismísima Muerte!

Toda una biblioteca llena de novelas, historias cortas, cuentos, poemas y canciones completan la entrada de Peter S. Beagle. Y señores y señoras, hay mucho, muchísimo de lo que hablar.

Demos comienzo al viaje literario a través del mundo beageliano:

De los trabajos más antiguos hemos hablado con relativa frecuencia. En el artículo Todo lo habido y por haber de Peter S. Beagle listábamos novelas e historias, colecciones, antologías, novelas de no ficción y películas, además de premios y trabajos relacionados con el mundo de la televisión y el cine. Beagle ha metido la mano en prácticamente todos los ámbitos culturales (últimamente en el teatro, pero de eso hablaremos más adelante).

No mencionaremos todos los trabajos publicados pero sí nos centraremos en algunos que más han destacado, como por ejemplo Tamsin, una novela que inicialmente escribió para Disney (quienes buscaban un nuevo proyecto para llevar a la gran pantalla), y que le reportó, en el año 2000, el premio Mythopoeic Fantasy Award for Adult Literature y la nominación al World Fantasy como mejor novela.

Estuvo nominado en multitud de ocasiones a los premios Mythopoeic Fantasy Award y al World Fantasy por novelas como The Inkeeper's Song y Giant Bones/The Magician of Karakosk. Las nominaciones más recientes fueron para The Line Between (en el 2007) y We never talk about my brother (2009).

Quiero centrarme un poco en el brillante trabajo que Beagle ha realizado con las tres últimas colecciones de historias cortas publicadas por la editorial Tachyon:

Empezando por la más antigua, y como ya comentamos en su día, está la recopilación Mirror Kingdoms que recogía bajo su título, 18 historias cortas. La mayoría ya fueron publicadas con anterioridad en otras ediciones pero valía la pena echarle un vistazo a esta edición ya que se trataba, una vez más, de una edición limitada en tan sólo 250 copias.

También está The Line Between, publicada en el 2006. Ésta magnífica recopilación contiene diversos títulos ya más antiguos pero también otros trabajos novedosos que hasta aquél momento no se habían leído antes. Historias como El Regalo, Quarry o Salt Wine levantaron mucha expectación. Además incluía la secuela de su famosa novela The Last Unicorn: Two Hearts. 231 páginas llenas de magia y fábulas en las que Beagle nos transportó a un mundo en el que las sirenas transmitían el secreto del vino salado a los hombres, en el que comenzó la caza de Soukyan, en el que dos hermanos descubren un don terrible y hermoso a la vez.

La más reciente es We never talk about my brother, bajo el que encontramos recopiladas historias como Uncle Chaim and Aunt Rifke and the Angel, Chandail (una precuela de The Inkeeper's Song) y la historia que da nombre a la colección: We never talk about my brother. Diez historias en 219 páginas que te atarán a reyes en apuros, ángeles terribles, poderes sobrenaturales y seres místicos.

Por las últimas noticias que hemos podido saber, el autor lleva planeando muchas nuevas publicaciones que deberían salir a la venta entre este año y el año próximo. Recién acabado el 52/50 Project (del que hablaremos a continuación), está metido de pleno en ferias de libro y obras de teatro (véase: The Last Unicorn y Giant Bones).

Esperemos que tanto trajín no haya mantenido excesivamente ocupado al escritor para poder cumplir con los anuncios de novedades de sus últimas Raven Newsletters.

Comentábamos que recientemente finalizó el 52/50 Project en el que Peter escribió 52+1 poemas y canciones de la más variada temática. No nos explayaremos más de lo necesario porque hace muy poco reseñamos este trabajo, pero repetiremos que ha sido una tarea brillante. No solo podemos disfrutar con estos poemas y canciones sino que nos brindan la posibilidad de acercarnos más al autor y a sus sentimientos. Se aprecia que en ellos ha metido algo más que genialidad como compositor y músico, sino que también ha volcado su corazón con temas tan personales como la familia y sus amigos más íntimos. El 52/50 Project ha sido quizás la obra más autobiográfica que el escritor haya podido relatar hasta el momento.

Ya que estamos hablando de recientes proyectos acabados y próximos lanzamientos, es imprescindible recordar que ya están disponibles los dos primeros tomos del cómic The Last Unicorn. Jose Gabriel (colaborador al que agradecemos todo el apoyo que nos da) nos comentó la grata sorpresa de comprobar que efectivamente se trata de un excelente trabajo con acabados asombrosos (para leer el artículo completo, clica aquí). Una fabulosa adaptación que vale la pena adquirir.

Hablando ahora de publicaciones futuras, quiero centrarme en primera instancia en un anuncio que a mí personalmente me sorprendió mucho: la publicación de Return, obra de la que se hablaba al principio sólo de pasada en algunos foros y sitios beagelianos. Puede que se me pasase por alto en algún momento pero tampoco recuerdo que se anunciase en ninguna Raven Newsletters. Si me equivoco, pido ya de antemano mil disculpas.

Y bien, Return es una novela muy esperada ya que se trata de la secuela del clásico The Inkeeper's Song, la favorita (dicho sea de paso) del autor. Editada en un volumen de tirada limitadísima, contará con las ilustraciones del prodigioso Maurizio Manzieri quien ha adelantado la portada del libro en su página de Facebook. Comenta Manzieri que ha sido un placer para él ilustrar esta obra y alaba lo buena que es. Hasta septiembre deberemos ser pacientes y esperar a ver ese resultado que a buen seguro, será muy positivo.

En la última Raven Newsletters supimos que para mediados de noviembre estará disponible la nueva versión de The Last Unicorn + Two Hearts con su audiolibro. Esperemos que en breve nos pueda contar más cosas sobre esta edición especial.

Por otro lado, recordemos que en diversas entrevistas publicadas en este blog en los dos últimos años, se anunciaron próximos títulos de los que no se ha vuelto a hablar pero que están muy presentes en las mentes de los lectores de Beagle. Se trata de las novelas: I'm afraid but you've got dragons, Summerlong y Sweet Lightning.

Sobre el primer título mencionado, aunque el autor lleve con el proyecto desde el 2007, las últimas noticias las tuvimos en junio del 2009, cuando en la entrevista a cargo de Christopher Hsiang se habló de trabajos pendientes de publicar. Peter comentó que Sumerlong estaba pendiente de revisión y faltaba darle un enfoque diferente a los dos últimos capítulos. Su publicación estaba prevista para abril del 2010. Parece que lleva algo de retraso, ¿quizás por dalre prioridad al 52/50 Project?

También habló sobre I'm afraid you've got dragons, novela que comienza de forma muy inocente y divertida y que a medida que avanza la trama se torna más oscura y seria. Una historia sobre reyes, príncipes, princesas y dragones. Y para acabar, está Sweet Lightning que, como dijo el autor, todavía llevaría algún tiempo escribirla ya que sería un trabajo muy personal. Lo único que sabemos es que la temática es deportiva (sobre el baseball).

Peter afirma que, una vez finalice estos tres proyectos, se pondría con nuevas ideas como una secuela de The Last Unicorn, una reedición en 4 volúmenes de la novela The Unicorn Sonata, Famous Monsters (novela sobre golems) y Four Years, Five Seasons (cuatro nuevas historias). También prometió nuevos relatos sobre Schmendrick (que personalmente me muero por descubrir).

Asimismo, en la contraportada de la edición The Line Between, encontramos mencionada la colección de no ficción Smeagol, Déagol and Beagle: Essays from the Headwaters of My Voice, del que no se sabe absolutamente nada.

No es poco, ya os lo había avisado. Peter S. Beagle ha publicado muchísimo, pero queda otro tanto por salir a la luz del día. El escritor tiene una gran cantidad de frentes abiertos así que deseémosle larga vida para que pueda continuar sorprendiéndonos con sus soberbias novelas, historias y canciones, y que pueda llevar al papel y publicar tanta maravilla literaria.

Habiendo completado el 52/50 Project ...

... comienzo a leerlo al completo y me parece un trabajo fantástico. Evidentemente, hay poemas/canciones que gustan más que otras, pero en su conjunto se aprecia que en estas 52 semanas (que en realidad han sido 53, pero luego volveremos sobre el asunto), Peter S. Beagle ha trabajado muchísimo para entregar un trabajo que brilla por su genialidad.

Lo que más aprecio de estos poemas y canciones y que a mi entender, más atractivo tienen, es que Peter nos acerca al poema. Incluso antes de empezar nos cuenta (si no él, su representante y amigo íntimo Connor), cómo llegó a visualizar ese trabajo, cómo se le ocurrió y el porqué. Lo que me parece fantástico es que Peter ha dejado de lado la frivolidad de escribir a destajo y publicar, acercando esas canciones a la gente, haciéndonos comprender porqué había elegido ese tema, qué tenía de especial para él. Ilustrado con una gran cantidad de imágenes y referencias a otros trabajos publicados y por publicar de este magnífico autor, Peter nos entregó, a todos/as que nos apuntamos al 52/50 Project, unas letras de canciones que posteriormente grabará para vender en un CD.

Y bien, ¿por qué han sido finalmente 53? Porque según Peter, éste es un trabajo lírico y después de cada concierto, uno se retira a su camerino pero oye a sus seguidores que claman por una canción más y como todo buen entertainer (no sólo literario sino también musical), decidió regalar a sus seguidores una última canción que además, forma parte del repertorio de canciones que se cantan en la obra de teatro Giant Bones que ahora mismo está siendo representada en el Exit Theatre de San Francisco. ¿Cuáles son las grandes sorpresas que no deberías perderte por nada en el mundo del 52/50 Project?

Para mí, los imprescindibles son los siguientes:

- At My Age (Semana 9, 15 de Junio del 2009): ésta es una preciosa canción escrita a petición de uno de los fans (Peter había anunciado que 10 de los 52 poemas/canciones se basarían en peticiones de sus fans). Karen Ellery dijo que su madre iba a celebrar pronto su 80 cumpleaños y que estaba buscando un poema que alabase las buenas cosas de ser mayor, de cumplir tantos años. Así que Peter escribió este precioso poema que comienza así:

How good to be old enough to have old friends,

to know that everything changes, and that nothing never ends,

to take my time, knowing that I have no time to spare,

and watch a lady brush her grandson's hair...

Qué bien ser suficientemente mayor como para tener viejos amigos,

saber que todo cambia, y que nada tiene fin,

tomarme tiempo, cuando no tengo tiempo que perder,

y ver cómo una anciana peina, el cabello de su nieto...

- The Lady made of Flowers (semana 10, 22 de Junio del 2009): ésta es una de las canciones que Peter escribió inspirado en el mundo de Sirit Biar y The Inkeepers Song. Esta entrega vino acompañada de una nota que comentaba el comienzo de la historia de Sirit Biar, el caminante, cantante y cuentacuentos, acompañado durante largos años por la niña Mircha Del quien decide relatar la triste historia de Sirit Biar. Ésta es una de las canciones que menciona en su relato:

Long ago,

before there were landlords,

long ago,

before there were kings,

there lived a lady

made all out of flowers,

made of honey and sunlight,

and such sweet things.

Hace mucho tiempo,

antes de que hubiese señores,

hace mucho tiempo,

antes de la existencia de los reyes,

había una mujer

toda hecha de flores,

de miel y rayos de sol,

y otras cosas dulces.

- Mister Harris (semana 12, 6 de Julio del 2009): una canción inspirada en la última campaña de Martin Luther King, en 1968. Peter ha querido hacerle honor a un recuerdo muy especial ligado a ese tiempo de acontecimientos y cambios políticos y sociales. Una canción dedicada a la memoria de un hombre que conoció un día en un autobús. El Sr. Collins Harris de Grady, Alabama:

Forty years, more,

that's how long it's been,

but I'd know that man

if I saw him again...

Cuarenta años, o más,

es cuanto ha pasado desde entonces,

pero sé que si volviese a ver a ese hombre

lo reconocería inmediatamente...

- The Last Song of Sirit Byar (semana 13, 13 de Julio del 2009). Ésta es una de las canciones más esperadas y es que se trata de la última canción que cantó Sirit Byar y con la que pretendía salvar a su amada, de la locura y la desesperación en la que llevaba sumida tantas décadas.

From the oldest old beginning,

since the world was set to spinning,

only two things worth the winning:

sorrow and love,

sorrow and love.

Desde el principio de los principios,

cuando el mundo fue hilando su existencia

sólo hay dos cosas que merecen la pena:

aflicción y amor

aflicción y amor.

- The Pigeon and the Dog (semana 16, 3 de Agosto del 2009). Ésta es una canción muy especial para mí y es que Rosemary Van Deuren (una fan de Peter) me habló de su primer encuentro con el autor, quien estaba en una conferencia y habló sobre la extraña relación amorosa que había nacido entre una paloma y un perro. Es uno de los recuerdos que Rosemary compartió conmigo y con el blog y al que más cariño le guardo, por lo entrañable que es. Aquí un pequeño extracto del poema, y si os interesa leer lo que me contó Rosemary, clicar aquí.

I used to know this pigeon, and I used to know this dog.

He had a hero's heart and the brains of a hollow log.

She was plump and cool and worldly, a lady to the core

but I never met two animals who loved each other more.

Conocía a esa paloma y conocía a ese perro.

Él tenía el corazón de un héroe y el cerebro de un tronco hueco.

Ella era rechoncha, chula y mundanda, una señora de todo corazón

pero nunca conocí a dos animales que se amasen más.

- Singing for Grandpa (semana 21, 7 de septiembre del 2009): una canción dedicada a su abuelo. Súper entrañable. Un poema/canción precioso para compartir con los más ancianos:

... His eyes held stories he never told,

and pain too deep for any disguise,

and sorrow older than he was old,

greater than a heart could hold...

... Sus ojos guardaban historias que nunca contó,

y pena demasiado grande y profunda como para ser disfrazada,

y tristeza más vieja que él mismo,

más grande de lo que un corazón podría soportar...

- Aggravating Woman (semana 26, 12 de Octubre del 2009). Ésta canción es súper especial y es que está basada en la tristeza del Capitán Cully, personaje de una de mis novelas favoritas, The Last Unicorn. Molly abandonó a Cully para seguir el camino del Unicornio y Schmendrick y la tristeza de Cully fue tan grande, que escribió una canción por ésta gran pérdida:

We were very young,

only she and I remember,

we ran off to the woods like children,

to play at being outlaws...

I thin perhaps we died that first December...

Éramos muy jóvenes,

sólo ella y yo lo recordamos,

nos escapamos a los bosques como niños,

jugando a ser proscritos...

Quizás morimos ese primer diciembre...

... I lie down today,

and I try not to remember

how she stared at that bloody wizard

whom I'd welcomed to our fire,

and bidden say his say.

Still perhaps he saved her from December,

- Mom on the Street (semana 37, 28 de diciembre del 2009): una canción muy personal y triste, dedicada a la difunta madre de Peter. Aunque sabe que no volverá a verla, su corazón está lleno de tristeza y aunque sabe que es imposible, guarda la secreta esperanza de volver a verla, cruzando la calle, paseando...

I know that it's silly,

it's hard to explain,

but I keep seeing Mom on the street...

Sé que es estúpido,

es difícil de explicar,

pero no puedo evitar seguir viendo a mamá por la calle...

- Deep Woods: the Unicorn sings to Memory (semana 48, 15 de Marzo del 2010): me gusta pensar (aunque no es así) que éste fue mi regalo de cumpleaños : la canción que dedicó el Unicornio (Amalthea) a su amor perdido, Lir.

... Deep in my deep heart,

where no one goes,

live songs I can never subdue.

Once my journey had an end -

rescue the weak,

find those I seek -

now only the road is true.

Still, in the deepest place of my deepest heart,

there is you.

... En lo más profundo de mi corazón,

donde nadie ha accedido jamás,

Nuestro contacto mejicano, Jose Gabriel, ha querido compartir con nosotros sus impresiones del primer número de la tan esperada adaptación al cómic de la novela The Last Unicorn/El Último Unicornio de Peter S. Beagle. Leyendo su reseña me han entrado unas ganas locas de hacerme con uno de estos números puesto que yo también tenía mis serias dudas al respecto. Pero Jose Gabriel convence total y absolutamente. Aquí os dejo con su reseña:

Cuando se trata de adaptaciones a los comics, hay una descripción usual que se suele hacer de estos: Aburridos y/o mediocres.

Claro que esto puede ser una generalización muy injusta en realidad si no se matiza. Por un lado, cualquier adaptación de un medio a otro sufre de este peligro. Por algo, como un amigo dijo en una ocasión, si los encargados no saben lo que están adaptando, incluso el trabajo más literal a la obra fuente puede perder completamente el punto. Cualquier fan de la literatura, por ejemplo, en general tiene que vivir con el hecho de que usualmente las adaptaciones cinematográficas pueden terminar cayendo en manos de alguien que pareciera no haber leído el libro que están adaptando. En cuanto a los comics pasa lo mismo, si quien se encarga de hacer la adaptación realmente conoce la obra e incluso la ama, pueden salir cosas como la adaptación grafica de “The Hunter” de Darwin Cooke, uno de los trabajos mas hermosos salidos en años recientes en forma de comic. Sin embargo, es especialmente en los comics que se llega a notar un trabajo de adaptación mediocre, especialmente cuando el guionista y dibujante no ocultan el hecho que no les importa el material que están adaptando.

Es por eso que cuando me entere de la adaptación de la novela de El Último Unicornio, una de las novelas y películas que mas aprecio realmente tenia interés en saber que es lo que iba a salir de aquí y donde realmente me sentía sinceramente preocupado. Claro que ya se habían mostrado paginas, muy bonitas, y el propio Peter aprobó la adaptación, así que horrible no debía ser, pero la preocupación de que terminara saliendo algo bastante flojo siempre estaba latente. Y considerando que hablamos de un comic de seis partes a 4 dólares cada tomo, no me gustaba pensar que estuviera comprando algo bastante menor solo por tratarse de una historia que realmente me gusta. Por eso cuando el comic llego finalmente a mis manos lo leí en ese mismo instante.

¿Mis palabras para describirlo? Simplemente hermoso.

No hablare en este caso del arte. Ya sabemos que es hermoso y en realidad si algo nos ha enseñado los comics es que arte hermoso no significa buena narrativa. Me concentraré en lo que es la adaptación y la manera de narrar la historia. Y debo confesar que el equipo de artistas y guionistas llegaron a lucirse de una manera que me pareció realmente inspirada, logrando una narración que es casi perfecta. El equipo compuesto entre Peter B. Gillis, Renae De Liz y Ray Dillon tomaron la decisión de tomarse su tiempo para narrar la historia, sin prisas y sin cortar la narración nada más para llegar directo a la acción. Una decisión realmente sabia, porque aprovechan la ocasión para adentrarnos al mundo de los unicornios por medio de imágenes y narración que realmente llega a tocar al lector.

Hay dos momentos, creo que todos los que hemos leído el comic estamos de acuerdo, donde realmente sabemos que estamos ante algo simplemente hermoso y que sabiamente están en las primeras 10 paginas del comic. Primeramente la introducción, la escena donde vemos el bosque y conocemos, de manera indirecta al unicornio (que debo decirlo, se dibujo de manera preciosa). Son tres paginas que son simplemente tan perfectas y hermosas que creo que voy a decir la herejía que me hubiera encantado que la película hubiera iniciado de la misma manera. La siguiente escena que me encanto viene casi a continuación y me sorprendió cuanto la ame. Me refiero a la escena de los cazadores, exactamente el momento donde se narra cuando la bisabuela de uno de ellos narra que vio un unicornio en su niñez. Este splash page, con los cazadores en medio mientras que sin viñetas notables a su alrededor, solo una serie de dibujos que inician con una niña y terminan con una anciana llorando creo que se ha vuelto uno de mis favoritos en lo que va del año. Por eso, cuando el unicornio dice esas míticas palabras “I am the last unicorn there is” el trabajo ya esta hecho. Hay que tener poco corazón para no quedar atrapado en este comic para este punto.

Por supuesto, apenas es el primer numero. Aun hay que ver 5 mas para concluir si la historia en general es excelente, buena, regular o mala. Pero luego de leer este primer numero, no solo se que es muy difícil que el trabajo termine decepcionando. También se que es uno de esos momento donde se, sin lugar a dudas, que este es uno de esos momentos que me encantan leer comics.

Antes de terminar, quisiera compartir la opinión de Chad Nevett, reseñista y colaborador de la pagina especializada ComicbookResource que hace al final cuando habla del comic:
“Beagle's story points out that most people in its world don't recognize a unicorn when they see one; perhaps they've become too jaded, or have lost their sense of the fantastic. I suspect that if you read "The Last Unicorn" #1, you'll find any sense of the fantastic that you might have otherwise mislaid. You'll fall in love with "The Last Unicorn" in a matter of minutes. I know I did.”

Qué maravilla que podamos contar con un nuevo testimonio, el de Sheila Johnson, quien comparte con nosotros la experiencia de conocer a Peter S. Beagle y pode hablarle de tú a tú. Aquí van sus palabras:

I've talked to Peter at several comic book conventions now. For the most part, I see him at the San Diego Comic-Con. The first time I saw him there, I told him that one of the first of his books that I read was the first book he published, A Fine and Private Place. I also told him that I received my copy of A Fine and Private Place from my mother, who had herself read it in her twenties. Peter, being as kind as he is, seemed to delighted to hear that his book had been handed down from one generation to the next, and he said that if I mailed it to him, he would sign it and mail it back to me. I never took him up on that offer, but the year after that, I did bring my equally ancient copy of The Last Unicorn, and he signed the second page of the book.

He tenido la oportunidad de hablar en diversas ferias de cómic con Peter, pero sobre todo lo veo cada año en el San Diego Comic-Con.La primera vez que lo vi allí le comenté que la primera novela suya que leí fue "A Fine and a Private Place", también su primera novela. También le conté que fue mi madre quien me la regaló, quien a su vez lo leyó cuando rondaba los 20 años. Peter, siendo tan amable como es, estaba encantado de oír que su libro había pasado de una generación a otra y me dijo que si se lo enviaba, estaría encantado de firmarlo. Nunca le envié el libro, pero esperé al siguiente año para llevarle mi ejemplar de The Last Unicorn, igual de antigua, y me la firmó la novela en su segunda página.

Since that first meeting, my visits with Peter at conventions have gotten longer and even more enjoyable. I should mention that this is in no small part due to the presence of Peter's business manager/editor/publisher, Connor Cochran. Connor attends these conventions with Peter, discusses Peter's current projects with people who stop by the table, and, for anyone who happens to linger around the table eager to talk, provides wonderful conversation on many subjects. He is a kind gentleman and a perfect complement to the writer sitting next to him!

Desde aquel primer encuentro, mis visitas al stand de Peter en las diferentes convenciones han sido siempre muy agradables. Y debo añadir que también es debido a la presencia de su amigo, compañero, manager, editor y representante Connor Cochran. Connor siempre acompaña a a Peter, cuenta entusiasmado los proyectos de Peter con la gente que se acerca a la mesa y todo aquél que esté cerca. Da muchísima conversación y es muy agradable. Es un hombre muy amable y un compañero excelente que hace muy buen equipo con el escritor (Peter).

No matter how many years pass, Peter seems to look the same. He is very easy to identify, with his slightly scraggly hair and the black leather jacket that he almost always seems to wear. The eyes are both kind and mischievous; you can tell that Peter enjoyed some shenanigans when he was younger. :) His eyes seem to glisten while he talks.

No importan los años que pasen, Peter siempre parece el mismo. Es fácil de identificar, con su pelo blanco y su chaqueta de cuero negra que parece llevar a perpetuidad. Sus ojos son amables y a la vez maliciosos: se podría decir que disfrutó de una juventud muy intensa. :) Sus ojos parecen brillar mientras habla.

And Peter will talk for a long time, and it's wonderful. I've seen him spend twenty minutes talking to one person, which, at busy conventions, very few artists or writers do. But Peter never gives the impression that it's time for him to move on to the next fan. He's very gracious. He will talk about literature, and he will talk about his friends; he will make fans who visit him feel as if they are his friends and have been for a long time. Get him talking about poetry if you ever meet him. He loves poetry, and it shows. He has entire volumes of poems memorized, and he recites them beautifully. The last time I saw him, at the Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo (C2E2), he began telling me about a poet named A.E. Housman, and for five wonderful minutes, he recited one of Housman's most subtly defiant poems. Amazing!

Peter siempre habla muchísimo y eso es genial. Le he visto entretenido durante 20 minutos hablando con una sola persona, cosa que muy pocos artistas y escritores suelen hacer. Pero Peter nunca da la impresión que quiere cortarte para pasar al siguiente fan. Es muy amable. Te hablará de literatura, de sus amigos, y logra hacerte sentir como si fueseis amigos de toda la vida. Se sabe interminables poemas de memoria, y los recita con una belleza sin par. La última vez que lo vi, en el Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo (C2E2), me habló de un poeta llamado A.E. Housman, y durante 5 preciosos minutos, me recitó sus poemas. ¡Fue increíble!

At C2E2, my partner, Wes, talked to Connor, and they both noticed something that Wes told me about later: Almost everyone who meets Peter ends up kneeling on the floor to talk to him at eye level instead of standing as most people do at conventions. I don't know how it happens, but Peter has this way of creating a bubble around him and the person he's talking to, and it's as if the only things that exist in the world are him, the other person, and the conversation they are having. Peter truly is a great storyteller.

En el C2E2, mi compañero Wes habló con Connor, y comentaron algo de lo que se habían dado cuenta: casi todo el que habla con Peter acaba arrodillado en el suelo, para estar a la altura del escritor y hablar con él, ojo con ojo. No sé cómo lo hace, pero logra que te olvides del mundo a tu alrededor, que sólo existís tú y él y la conversación que estáis teniendo. Peter es un auténtico cuenta-cuentos.

Two days ago, on April 20th, Peter turned 71. But that was the day after he'd just gotten back from Chicago, so we delayed the picnic party until this weekend.

"Deep Woods (the Unicorn sings to Memory)" — the song an immortal unicorn carries in her heart forever, as she grieves for all things mortal that she has loved, including one particular man.

"Save It for the Next Life," a surprisingly dramatic exhortation to live your life without excessive drama. (Pure Peter all the way, that.)

These pieces bring the total up to 49 new songs and poems, which means there are just three more to go before Peter hits his 71st birthday and this phase of the Project ends. COOL TATTOOS, PART 1

People put some very interesting marks on their bodies. (You may have noticed. Heck, you may have done it.) And from time to time that includes images which are from The Last Unicorn, or which can certauinly be related to it.

Every now and then we find out about one of these. So it's time to start sharing...

For example, here's Peter's own handwriting, permanently attached by an artist's tattoo needle to Crystal Kaval's foot:

Then there's the single best butterfly tattoo we've ever seen, which wasn't actually inspired by The Last Unicorn, but which gets special mention here because it was discovered just after Peter's birthday party in Golden Gate Park last April. While cleaning up and packing, Terri and Connor met Lily Rasel, who gave her permission to take this photo because she recognized Peter's name and liked the fact that we loved her skin art. "It's you and me, moth! Hand to hand to hand to hand..."

Return, la nueva novela de Peter S. Beagle

Gracias a Jose Gabriel volvemos a disfrutar de novedades acerca de las próximas publicaciones de Peter S. Beagle. En esta ocasión echamos un vistacillo a la próxima novela beageliana: Return.

Si ya fue fascinante la novela de The Inkeeper's Song y la continuación de las aventuras de Lal y Soukyan en Giant Bones / The Magician of Karakosk, no nos podremos perder esta última entrega en la que continúan (¡y quizás acaben!) las aventuras de Soukyan (también conocido como Nyateneri). En esta esperada secuela, Soukyan se enfrentará una vez más, cara a cara, con el mal que le ha estado persiguiendo durante toda su vida adulta. Deberá hacer frente a fuerzas sobrenaturales que han intentado durante años acabar con él y puede que sus aventuras encuentren ese final... ¿pero cuál? Sólo lo sabremos si pillamos un ejemplar de Return.

If you live anywhere near San Mateo, California, this coming Saturday afternoon offers you a special treat: the first-ever public performance of The Maltese Omelette, at the M is For Mystery Bookstore.

Quoting Peter: "The Maltese Omelette is a radio play by Michael Kurland, written as an affectionate parody of The Maltese Falcon, but with all the characters having names and resumes out of nursery rhymes. In other words, the Bogartesque private eye is named Sam Spud; his partner — properly murdered, of course, early on — is one Humpty Dumpty, and the two sinister seekers after the legendary Maltese Goose are Wee Willy Winkie (played with a Sydney Greenstreetish rumble and boom by the equally legendary Richard A. Lupoff) and George Porgie, played by yours truly, who turns out to his own surprise to be inhabited by the shade of Peter Lorre. There's also Bo Peep (a Marlene Dietrich soundalike, complete with sheep), a femme fatale Little Miss Muffit, and two inspectors from the SFPD, Jack Sprat and Peter Peter Pumpkineater, both of whom have domestic problems.

"The show also features commercials for Majestic Motor Oil — read with perfect 1940s unctuousness by Marta Randall — and, naturally, original radio-type music, composed and performed by Linda Robertson."

1) IDW Publications will premiere issue #1 of their six-issue Last Unicorn adaptation at WonderCon, in San Francisco, on April 2nd. (That's the first issue cover, just above.)

BALLOON ANIMALS! (THANKS, ROB)

And now for some deeply wonderful silliness.

A while back, Peter got sent a link to a picture of a Last Unicorn balloon animal. Here's what he found when he went there:

Well, that was nifty. And it was part of a whole collection of wildly creative balloon animals by a fellow named Rob Vary, so Connor emailed Rob and asked if we could include the balloon unicorn in the RAVEN newsletter someday.

Rob said yes...and revealed that not only was he a fan of Peter's work, he was already signed up to get the RAVEN!

Kismet. Karma. Fate. Something like that. In his reply, Connor thanked Rob and said "The only thing cooler than running the unicorn shot would be to run a Red Bull, too."

Well...not even a couple of hours later, Rob sent back an email that included this:

Wow. Double wow. (Of course, now Connor wishes he had a video of Rob making both of these. And hey, how about an entire balloon animal Midnight Carnival?)
